UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services is seeking a psychiatrist to provide thoughtful care to young adult students with serious mental health symptoms.

Our psychiatrists provide outpatient treatment Monday - Friday with no on-call hours. They provide medication management with the biopsychosocial model in mind. Psychiatrists are also part of a comprehensive treatment team, with case managers and therapists available to the patient. Remote and on-site hours are available.

While full-time employment is preferred, a part-time 4-day per week schedule is possible. If working less than 12 months is preferred, a 10 or 11 month position is available. Such a position offers regularly scheduled unpaid, non-work periods in the summer during which the Psychiatrist remains an employee and retains health benefits, but is not at work.

    DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service health facility offering clinical, educational, counseling, and psychiatry services to students on the UCSC campus. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

    Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a variety of mental health and psychological services to UCSC undergraduate and graduate students, including intake assessment brief individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, mental health outreach and workshop programming, consultation, and liaison relationships to support student mental health and well-being.

    Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources, & Empowerment), the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs.

    Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff members including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. SHS welcomes staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

    The UCSC Psychiatry Service emphasizes crisis intervention, medication management, supportive psychotherapy in conjunction with medication management, and consultations with other medical providers, counselors, and other campus administrators and staff. The Psychiatry team is led by the Director of Psychiatry and consists of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, case managers, and a medical assistant.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general supervision of the Director of Psychiatry, the Psychiatrist evaluates and treats patients in an outpatient setting located within Student Health Services in the Counseling and Psychological Services Department of the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC).


    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary:
    $20,333 - $22,500 / month, proportionate to time worked. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

    JOB DUTIES

    60% - Evaluation and Treatment

  • Performs medical/psychiatric evaluations and provides follow-up care for students with psychiatric disorders. Follow-up care ranges from daily to three-month visits depending on the patient's need.
  • Prescribes and monitors psychotropic medications.
  • Provides supportive psychotherapy in conjunction with medication management, if needed.
  • Documents clinical information in the electronic medical record.
  • Participates in periodic chart review, case presentations, and clinical supervision of Nurse Practitioner staff, as needed.


    20% - Crisis Intervention

  • Responsible for initial management of mental health crises referred by the Health Center or other campus units when scheduled to be the on-duty psychiatrist.
  • Performs medical/psychiatric diagnostic workup and makes appropriate interventions, including prescription of psychotropic medication, and hospitalization, if needed.
  • Documents clinical information in the electronic medical record.

    20% - Consultation

  • Consults with Health Center primary care providers, counseling staff, and other campus community members as needed when there are psychiatric concerns involving students.
  • Documents clinical information in the electronic medical record.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess MD Degree and Completion of an APA approved psychiatric residency.
  • Must possess valid California licensure, in good standing, in Psychiatry OR Valid out-of-state* licensure, in good standing, in Psychiatry. Out of State licensed psychiatrists are required to acquire California licensure within 180 days from either submitting the application or beginning California residency, whichever occurs first.
  • Experience providing service to a young adult population
  • Experience working in outpatient setting in psychiatry
  • Good written skills, including medical charting and correspondence; Ability to chart and document in an electronic medical record.
  • Good verbal skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of evaluation and treatment, crisis intervention, medication management, supportive psychotherapy in conjunction with medication management, and consultation with clinical and administrative staff
  • Ability to work and communicate in a positive and cooperative manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team of mental health and primary providers
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to work with a diverse population, particularly when students are in varying states of emotional distress
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence in mental health service provision
  • Knowledge of how race, ethnic identity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, privilege, and multiculturalism relate to psychiatric service delivery in a university setting
  • Ability to handle difficult, sensitive and confidential situations tactfully


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a university environment and of the developmental issues and difficulties typically encountered by college students


    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is a fully remote position, and the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
