JOB POSTING

UC Santa Cruz Counseling and Psychological Services is seeking a licensed psychotherapist for the position of Campus Mobile Crisis Team (CMCT) Supervisor. The Mobile Crisis Response Team is responsible for responding to mental health and related crises happening on the UCSC campus.

The CMCT program was created in 2022 to respond to emergent mental health situations on our campus and to support student voices asking for innovative, culturally sensitive, and tiered responses to campus mental health crises and the national trend towards non-police options.

The Mobile Crisis Team Supervisor will oversee the work of mobile mental health crisis responders, be on call for backup coverage, provide direct mobile crisis intervention, respond to critical incidents, promote the Mobile Crisis Response service on campus, and work with campus partners on larger community safety issues.

    DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    The Campus Mobile Crisis Response Team is organized within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and interfaces with multiple key campus entities including UCSC Risk Services, Police, Dean of Students Office, and Campus Housing. Part of Student Health Services, the mission of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is to support UCSC students, both graduate and undergraduate, in maintaining or improving their general well-being by providing a broad range of counseling, psychiatric services, consultation, and outreach services and programs to the campus community. Student Health Services (SHS) strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. SHS is a full-service medical facility offering medical, educational, and psychological services to diverse students on the UC Santa Cruz campus.

    The UC Santa Cruz Campus Mobile Crisis Response Team is an innovative program responding to the identified need on the Santa Cruz campus to provide a tiered response to campus mental health crises that includes a non-police option. While this team services the entirety of the campus community, it is particularly relevant for the BIPOC element of our widely diverse campus. The Mobile Crisis Response Program 1) provides daytime, after-hours, and weekend campus crisis intervention; 2) improves the campus culture of care and infrastructure supporting students experiencing crisis, and 3) expands outcome monitoring and follow-up services for students in crisis.

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Mobile Crisis Response Team Supervisor oversees the UC Santa Cruz Campus Mobile Crisis Team and is supervised by the Counseling and Psychological Services Director. The Mobile Crisis Response Team is responsible for responding to mental health and related crises happening on the UCSC campus. The position specifically oversees the work of mental health responders employed in the program including hiring, training, and quality assurance. The position will be on call for backup coverage, provide direct mobile crisis intervention, be expected to respond to critical incidents, promote the Mobile Crisis Response service on campus, and work with campus partners on larger community safety issues.


    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary:
    $110,000-$130,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES


    40% - Supervision

  • Oversees daily operations and monitors program workflow.
  • Supervises staff and assists with challenging and complex interactions/issues.
  • Advises on crisis response strategies.
  • Participates in recruitment, interviewing, and candidate selection and conducts department orientation.
  • Assesses competency and conducts annual performance reviews.
  • Coordinates professional development activities and participates in provider training.
  • Develops topical trainings for a team of campus mobile crisis counselors.
  • Organizes trainings for the team from local experts on specific topics.
  • Ensures providers adhere to quality standards, internal policies, and external regulations.
  • Ensures providers accurately document all client-related activities within an established time frame.


    25% - Program Management

  • Provides consultations on possible involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations (5150s).
  • Attends and organizes regular care coordination meetings with various local social service agencies, UC Santa Cruz Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and other groups as needed.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives integrating client and community feedback.
  • Integrates transformative changes in campus response to student mental health crises and campus critical incidents to ensure that all students receive the mental health care they need.
  • Assists with the allocation and management of program resources. Suggests ways to increase efficiency and improve quality of care. Requests additional resources when necessary.


    25% - Mobile Crisis Intervention and Prevention

  • Conducts mental health assessments and crisis intervention for students in the field.
  • Provides a regular presence on campus as part of the Campus Mobile Crisis Team as dispatched by central communications and during routine rounds.
  • Provides behavioral health support and care to people experiencing mental health crises or mild intoxication.
  • Applies de-escalation techniques and crisis communication/management.
  • Once certified, writes 5150's/Involuntary Hospitalization holds to the Santa Cruz County Crisis Stabilization Program.
  • Maintains confidentiality and respects the boundaries of clients experiencing emotional distress.
  • Documents services provided. Records and tracks relevant call data.
  • Responds to high-intensity situations with police and fire. Communicates with police to provide backup as indicated.


    10% - Outreach and Community Engagement

  • Promotes the mobile crisis response program on campus to the students.
  • Provides public education to the student body on topics related to mobile crisis response, mental health, and crisis situations.
  • Attends regular meetings with the county Department of Health and other government health organizations.
  • Attends regular meetings with the Police Department, Fire Department, and other local first responders.
  • Provides presentations to local organizations about the scope of service of the team and how to access them.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in related area or equivalent experience.
  • Licensed in a behavioral health counseling discipline such as Psychologist, LCSW, LMFT, or LPCC.
  • Significant experience in behavioral health care, preferably crisis and/or field-based intervention.
  • Knowledgeable about harm reduction, trauma-informed care, patient-centered care, suicide assessment, and motivational interviewing.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidence of privileged information and perform a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, organizational skills, flexibility and discretion.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills sufficient to provide expertise, guidance, case consultation, and professional development to campus mobile crisis team staff.
  • Experience interacting with diverse individuals of various ethnic, racial, social, cultural, economic, political, sexual orientation, and gender identities. Demonstrated multicultural experience, skills, and expertise in providing culturally competent and trauma-informed services to a BIPOC client population.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues in the delivery of crisis services.
  • Interpersonal Skills - strong sense of compassion and ability to maintain a calm demeanor in the midst of high-intensity situations.     SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Licensed in a behavioral health counseling discipline such as Psychologist, LCSW, LMFT, or LPCC.
  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test within 60 days of hire.
  • Required to take HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) training within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain LPS* (Lanterman-Petris-Short Act) designation from Santa Cruz County Behavioral Health within 90 days of hire. LPS designation allows the holder to write an involuntary hold for a psychiatric hospitalization (5150). In Santa Cruz County this results in an evaluation by the local Crisis Stabilization Program that can last up to 24 hours, after which a determination is made whether a further hold is required
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Will be required to wear a University provided uniform.
  • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
